Holy Moly!
Overview

TS-431P3: Quad-Core NAS with Feature-Rich 2.5 GbE LAN

Featuring a 1.7GHz Alpine AL-314 quad-core processor and 2.5GbE LAN connectivity, the 4-bay 2.5"/3.5" QNAP TS-431P3 offers home users multiple features including snapshot-based backup, file synchronization, and private cloud services. The TS-431P3 is also a home entertainment centre for streaming photos, music and videos to multiple devices either locally or over the internet.

Deploy your home network

Powered by an Annapurna Labs Alpine AL-314 1.7 GHz quad-core processor, 2 GB or 4 GB DDR3L RAM, a 1 GbE network port and a 2.5 GbE network port, the TS-431P3 includes a 2.5 GbE RJ45 port, which delivers up to 2.5 times the speed of regular Gigabit Ethernet and enables smoother multimedia playback and everyday use. The TS-431P3 ensures data security by supporting 256-bit AES encryption and various local/remote/cloud backup options

Easy and Secure File Management

File Station enables direct management of files stored on the TS-431P3 and in the cloud. Users can easily transfer files from their PC, drag and drop files between folders, rename/delete files, and set folder/file permissions to prevent unauthorized access. Similarly, users can use Microsoft Office Online to directly view/edit Microsoft Office documents stored on the TS-431P3. Confidential/sensitive data can also be encrypted to enhance security.

Multi-point file backup, access and synchronisation

The TS-431P3 supports file sharing protocols (including SMB/CIFS, AFP and NFS) for Windows, Mac and Linux/UNIX devices. Combined with Qsync (a utility that turns a QNAP NAS into a secure and high-capacity data centre for file synchronization), any file uploaded to the TS-431P3 becomes available to all related devices, such as desktops, laptops, and mobile devices. Hybrid Backup Sync helps backup/synchronize data on the TS-431P3 to another QNAP NAS, remote server, or cloud storage for disaster recovery. In addition, QuDedup technology greatly improves the efficiency of multi-version backup to destination storage, while optimizing storage utilization. You can install the QuDedup Extraction Tool on your computer and restore deduplicated files to their normal state.

Protect important data with snapshots

Snapshots help protect data by recording the entire NAS system state and metadata. With snapshots, users can quickly restore files to previously saved states if files are accidentally deleted or modified, or if the system is compromised by malware. QNAP snapshots are block-based and save only modified data. Not only do they save storage space, but they also reduce the time needed to back up and restore data.

Monitor system status and data security

The Notification Center consolidates all QTS system events and alerts, providing a single app solution for notifications. Security Counselor recommends actions and settings to enhance the security of TS-431P3.

Extend the functionality of your NAS

Container Station integrates LXC and Docker lightweight virtualization technologies, allowing users to host and operate containerized applications directly on the TS-431P3. With many popular and fully configured applications available on the integrated Docker Hub (also for automation and multimedia), the TS-431P3 provides users with a wide range of high-potential functions and application capabilities.

In addition, the TS-431P3 includes apps for backup/synchronisation, content management, communications, downloading and entertainment. All apps can be installed with a single click from the QTS App Center.

Simplified photo management

QuMagie brings you a whole new experience in photo management. By incorporating a deep learning AI algorithm, QuMagie enables facial recognition, object identification, and geotagging of photos on your NAS. Similar photos are grouped into AI albums (i.e. People, Objects and Places). Other useful features include built-in chronological scrolling, customizable folder covers and a powerful search tool, providing you with the ultimate photo management and sharing solution.

    Does what it wants

It's pretty, it does what it's told. Or almost.

I mainly use it to back up my data (from a Mac) and to store movies (and play them via a Zidoo player, it works perfectly for that).

The NAS doesn't know how to set up a DAS to do automated backups. It backs up, it ejects, it doesn't search. The backup software does anything, I went back to Carbon Copy Cloner. Impossible to restore data on a blank installation of macOS, it is a raw backup less efficient than an external HD.
The Cloud features are regularly pointed out for security issues, not being a network administrator, it is better to abstain.

The biggest black spot for me: the crontab.
I didn't know what it was. The NAS periodically performs maintenance operations and it does so at a fixed time, but the interface does not allow you to change this.
If it's not the right time (noise, need for data access), well... you have to learn how to use the terminal and some VIM language skills to modify the crontab. Which I did. Because I live in a studio, and the maintenance runs daily at 3am, it scratches intensely on all the disks at the same time for 10 to 20 minutes, to the point where it wakes me up.

I was able to change the schedule of this maintenance. The recent updates cancel and make these changes impossible. We don't know why, it's not documented. On the official forum, just a handful of bitter users who just say they don't know anything about it but don't offer any help, and support answers without being able to help (they don't know). And there's no monitoring.
So every night I turn it off, it's ridiculous.

It's a good product for local storage, but for people who live in at least a 2 room flat. Far from the user experience sold by QNAP. Neither pro nor consumer.

Good, but only for 4TB max disk configurations.

I use this QNAP TS-431P3 NAS to store movies, photos, documents, etc. via a private 1Gbps home network. It is equipped with 4 Seagate IronWolf 4TB NAS drives.
    I like :
    - fairly easy installation,
    - the updates (several times a year) offered by QNAP go very well,
    - 1Gbit/s effective network speed (113Mb/s observed) with a PC running Windows 10 64 bit,
    - Many applications and features, including remote access outside the home,
    - remote wake up of the server (in standby) by PC on the network.
    I don't like:
    - Video file icons are not generated by Multimedia console. You have to load the third party application Cayin Mediasign player for them to be generated,

    Comment:
I have another TS-431P and the server has a lot of trouble getting rid of the power dissipated by 4 8TB NAS drives. It is absolutely necessary to use the "adjust speed according to temperature threshold" mode with the preset thresholds to avoid overheating the disks. Unfortunately, the NAS then becomes noisy and annoying.

    Beyond my expectations...

I was only planning to use it for backups so I wouldn't be blocked in case of ransomware. The nas goes far beyond what I expected.

I can easily share a file between my pc, my mac and my iphone. For example, I converted a .numbers file on my iphone that I received on my pc and then retrieved it again on my pc. All this without a usb stick or email or remote cloud storage.
I created a secure space for myself, another for my partner, a shared space and a backup space for my server. I have created 3 accounts that can only access their own space.

It can perfectly replace DropBox. You can access your files even if you are not at home and without a subscription. You just have to configure MyQnapCloud and QSync. You don't have to keep the file on your drive. I have 12TB of cloud storage without a subscription.
For my server backup, I just copy (script) files to a folder and it syncs to the nas at home
You can also download replay from your computer (Captvty) and access it from anywhere on your phone in streaming with QVideo. It's streaming so you don't keep the file on your phone (handy).
You can view your files remotely on your phone with QFile and download them only when you need them.
I synced my photos from the phone to the nas. That way I have a copy if I lose my phone or it becomes unusable.

It's not just the NAS that you need to consider but also the software and application suite that goes with it. It's a bit time consuming to set up but worth it for families and businesses.
Here's a video that helped me a lot which explains everything from disassembly to configuration of QSync.

I ordered another QNap NAS to make a remote copy of this one but I haven't set it up yet.

A good NAS to store your files locally

I bought this NAS to replace clouds where you don't know what the data is being stored for. The synchronization between my different PCs is now done at the speed of my local network and not at the speed of my internet connection. The size is no longer a problem.

    For :
    - Versatile and complete
    - Economical and quiet
    - Good read/write performance
    - 2.5GB Ethernet port but lacks multi GIG switches in the market
    - Multiple RAID-based storage configuration options
    - PLEX server installed on the NAS

    Cons:
    - File sharing is not always easy to configure
    - Not powerful enough to do video transcoding in PLEX, so you have to be careful with video encoding formats. No problem with a SAMSUNG SMART TV.

    Conclusion
I love this device and I don't regret my purchase at all
