Overview

TS-251D: Scalable 2-Bay Multimedia NAS

The QNAP TS-251D NAS is ideal for home use for people looking for a backup solution and those who want to centralize their multimedia content. The TS-251D allows 4K (H.264) transcoding on the fly with its Intel Celeron J4005 Dual-Core processor and file sharing on all connected devices. This QNAP NAS is expandable with a PCIe 2.0 x4 slot and the amount of RAM can be increased up to 8GB.

Compact and powerful

Powered by an Intel Celeron J4005 Dual-Core 2 GHz processor (burst up to 2.7 GHz), DDR4 RAM (up to 8 GB), Gigabit LAN port and support for SATA 6 Gb/s hard drives, the TS-251D combines network expansion cards to ensure consistent read/write performance. The TS-251D incorporates Intel AES-NI 256 accelerated encryption for the entire NAS volumes and shared folders, improving the system performance while ensuring the security of sensitive data stored in the TS-251D.

Real-time 4K Transcoding

Equipped with Intel UHD Graphics technology, the TS-251D supports hardware decoding and real-time transcoding on two 4K channels, allowing you to convert videos into universal file formats that can be played back smoothly on multiple devices. You can also watch high-quality 4K media files on an HDTV using the HDMI 2.0 output or use it with Plex Media Server to stream media files to mobile devices and media streaming devices (including DLNA, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Chromecast).

Back up your data easily

The TS-251D stores data and files centrally and supports file sharing protocols including SMB/CIFS, AFP and NFS for Windows, Mac and Linux/UNIX devices. Combined with Qsync (a feature that turns a QNAP NAS into a secure and high-capacity data centre for file synchronisation), any file uploaded to the TS-251D will be made available to all related devices, such as computers, laptops, or mobile devices. Hybrid Backup Sync allows you to easily backup or synchronize data on the TS-251D to other QNAP NAS, remote servers, or cloud storage for easy disaster recovery

Advanced Photo Management

QuMagie incorporates QuMagie Core AI image recognition technology for facial recognition, feature identification, and photo geolocation. Similar photos are sorted into People, Places and Objects albums. In addition, QuMagie includes features such as built-in timeline scrolling, customizable album covers, an iOS Live Photos view and a powerful search tool, giving you the ideal solution for managing and sharing images.

    It works but...

I had ordered this Nas because it has an HDMI output with the possibility of broadcasting multimedia content in 4K. However, I have never been able to use it in this sense. The environment proposes to install multiple applications, including a paying one, to be able to do it and it bugs and it crashes and it bugs again. The result is that I proceed differently (smartTV retrieves content but via a multitude of abstruse directories).
The Nas "classic" operation is fine even if once again the software management features leave something to be desired. I had for example created a shared folder that I wanted to delete afterwards. I can't do it. I can empty the content without any problem but not delete the folder...
Concerning the remote access, it works but... The environment strongly advises against port mapping via upnp for security reasons but I couldn't figure out how to do it manually... as a result I ended up using this method anyway and again I get error messages despite configuring it via the automatic installation tool. That being said I can still access it via myQnapCloud, the gateway between the connection point and the Nas but not directly via the internet address of the Nas which doesn't seem to work. I have relatively low transfer speeds despite fibre and vdsl connections.
In short, the software part is not completely up to date and it's a shame.
