Online Volume Expansion
The DX517's additional bays, managed from DiskStation Manager on the host NAS, are immediately ready for use upon login. On-the-fly volume expansion ensures that storage and services are not interrupted during volume expansion.
Hot-swappable disk tray design
The DX517's hot-swappable disk trays allow for easy installation and replacement of disks without having to power down the system. The screwless disk tray design reduces system installation time.
A dedicated local backup solution
The Synology DX517 can be used as a dedicated local backup solution for the Synology DiskStation. When created as a separate volume, the DX517 provides a very useful backup solution to its local disks in case of system failure.

Does not accept all disks (there are mechanical deceptions), so it is advisable to take disks for NAS. Connects with a cable (included) that screws to the NAS for e-sata. The NAS can put it to sleep/shutdown/restart so the start button will not be used often. Quiet fans. Beware, the chargers are not the same as on the DS920, but it's still a 3 1/2 drive assembly without screws: happiness.
Added to a ds920+, not quite the same shape, and non-interchangeable drive slots, LEDs not in the same place (on each drive) but once connected and the 920+ rebooted (and yes, you have to reboot) is instantly recognised.
Offers 5 additional bays, which allow you to create a volume and add a hot plug disk for the existing volume or the new one, allows to extend the old one, etc...
In short, essential if you hope to grow in volume, rather than change all your disks. And allows you to take advantage of SSD caches just in case.
As described, purchased for use with a DS918+ which recognises it very well. Easy to install.

For a shr volume that you create in several times, start by placing the smallest HDDs in it ;-).
Perfect for expanding a Synology NAS that accepts the DX-517 (see Synology's website for compatibility), this 5-bay expansion unit connects to your NAS via a handheld e-sata screw cable (supplied with the DX-517). I use it to store backups of my NAS but it can also be a way to expand your storage capacity. Like the Synology NAS, it recognises hot-swap disks. With 5 bays, this leaves plenty of room for expansion. Recognised my 2 WD RED 10TB drives without any problem.
