I'm pretty much a computer nerd, and I must admit that the LDLC advice combined with the Synology documentation allowed me to install my NAS without too much difficulty :)
I even managed to make it my TimeMachine, which I thought was out of reach ;)
Absolutely perfect. Installed as a replacement for my DS213J, this is my 3rd NAS from Synology. It is much more powerful and faster than the old one and I don't regret it. The mounting of the disks without screws is perfect too. It is possible to increase the capacity later by adding disks without creating a new volume.
I had a DS213+ and replaced it with the DS418.
The switch works very well, simply by replacing the disks in the new NAS.
The performance is good because I don't use the NAS enough to notice.
I like the rails for the disks more practical and lockable. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to use the new NAS for the first time.
The downside is that the 2 fans (92 mm) are too loud. After dismantling (easy) and testing (requested by Synology support), I should receive 2 new fans. But not wishing to wait and not confident of the quality of the models provided by Synology, I replaced the fans with 2 Be Quiet! Pure Wings 2 (which have the same rotation speed, to avoid potential NAS alarms). It's much better, even if a slight rolling noise can be heard, than if you're really careful.
Superb quality and excellent handling. For beginners the help is clear and the installation easy. The only drawback is the apparent fragility of the box. Otherwise the features are numerous and the result is really great.
I'm really happy with this NAS.
It comes as a replacement for an aging netgear nas duo.
The interface is really nice and user friendly.
I've installed it with two 2Tb hard drives.
The write and read accesses are really impressive (110 Mb/s in writing, limited by the 1gb network).
It makes MUCH less noise (fan and disk) than my previous NAS.
It also has dual authentication which I like.
All the ease of Synology, plug and play at all levels and well-designed user interfaces.
As for speed, it's unfortunately/unfortunately the Gigabit cables that limit speeds. So reading/writing at 110~120 Megabytes per second, whether from a PC, Popcorn or between NAS. I did try to connect the 2 RJ45s as there are two of them, but obviously it doesn't change anything, it's meant for when you have sub-networks, or a normal network and a vpn for example.
The only thing is that if you don't know much about it, you have to understand the protocols and the system settings. And I'm not sure how to set up my DS418 so as not to leave too many useless services, security holes, etc.
