Overview

Ultrastar DC HC520: High Density Storage

The Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC520 12Tb hard drive is especially dedicated to professionals for use in data centres. Indeed, this 3.5" hard drive for companies has many assets for a server use such as its RAFF anti-vibration technology, a load of 550 TB/year and an MTBF of 2.5 million hours.

Available in 10TB, 12TB and 14TB capacities, the DC HC500 Series can be used for enterprise servers, backup systems, cloud and enterprise NAS that require 512-byte (512e) sector size for high performance and high density storage with HelioSeal technology.

Designed for data centres

The Ultrastar DC HC520 features multi-axis shock sensor technology that automatically detects and compensates for even the smallest shocks to protect the data stored on the Ultrastar DC HC520, and is equipped with RAID-specific features such as error recovery time that is reduced through the hard drive's error recovery processes. Ramp load/unload technology moves the recording heads away from the platters when the drive is not in use and when powering down, ensuring less wear and tear on the recording heads and media.

    Good flows

I received it quickly as usual, it heats up less than the 18 and 20TB versions (45° vs 52°, on a usb dock so not ventilated). I've been using my LDLC usb dock for several years now. Good speeds 155MB/sec on average with peaks at 201MB/sec. It makes a bit of noise (it scratches a bit at times) but it's still reasonable.

    Excellence in every respect

Superb performance for this drive (210 MB/s write on large files). The large buffer allows me to make copies from several different sources in parallel while maintaining this throughput overall.

Extremely competitive price (37.5€ per TB).

Although I can't back it up personally yet (I've only had the drive for a month), in theory the reliability should be excellent:
    - 5 year warranty.
    - Announced MTBF of 2.5 million hours.
    - Designed by HGST (the most reliable drives according to Backblaze reports)

The only downside: The drive is noisy when reading/writing.
This is hardly a criticism of a datacenter drive but it still prevents me from giving it a 10/10.
