The Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC550 18Tb hard drive is especially dedicated to professionals for use in data centres. Indeed, this 3.5" hard drive for companies has many assets for a server use such as its RVS anti-vibration technology, a load of 550 TB/year and an MTBF of 2.5 million hours.
Available in capacities from 10TB, the DC HC500 Series can be used for enterprise servers, backup systems, cloud and enterprise NAS that require 4096-byte (4Kn) sector size for high performance and high density storage with HelioSeal technology.
The Ultrastar DC HC550 features multi-axis shock sensor technology that automatically detects and compensates for even the smallest shocks to protect the data stored on the Ultrastar DC HC550, and is equipped with RAID-specific features such as error recovery time that is reduced through the hard drive's error recovery processes. Ramp load/unload technology moves the recording heads away from the platters when the drive is not in use and when powering down, ensuring less wear and tear on the recording heads and media.

It is very hot, 51° after a few hours of transfer (hard disk on usb dock so not ventilated). I've been using my LDLC usb dock for several years now. Good transfer rate (180Mb/sec on average with peaks at 195Mb/sec). Good To/price ratio (I took advantage of a promotion).
The hard drive does the job, and silently. A few scratching noises the first day, then nothing. Time for all the innards to copy themselves and be in place.
Then quiet, good throughput, low access time.
Just the price is a bit prohibitive, but that's the case with all of them in these capacities... hence the 4 stars.

I have an ultra-quiet setup (I only have 2 enclosure fans that I only hear when I turn up the power) and now I can hear this hard drive, accessing every 5 seconds, even if I don't access it myself.
So for server use, as mentioned, I don't see a problem, and noise is certainly not a criteria. I've used all the SMART tools to test it (apart from the full 32+ hour test), there are no problems to report.
I think this is the last platter hard drive I'll ever buy, large capacity SSDs are still a bit expensive, but the rapid drop in price will soon make old hard drives look like dinosaurs.
As soon as I received it and put it at room temperature, I tested the clusters with the WD tools provided for this drive, perfect surface conditions.
I'm not sure if it's a good one or not, but I'm sure it's a good one. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to use the same drive as the one I'm using now, but it's a good idea to use the same drive as the one I'm using now.
An 18Tb which gives in reality 16Tb, all the same 2Tb less.
Otherwise, the price is 30-35 Euros per TB, which is correct.
To see in time if it is reliable.
