I've been using this drive for about 1 month and it's working fine, but it makes a bit of noise when used intensively.
Hard drive using unreliable SMR technology, allowing the manufacturer to drastically reduce manufacturing costs, to the detriment of quality.
In 1 and a half years, out of 10 disks that have never moved, always in the same place, no knocks, etc, I've already got 1 dead...
To put it simply, SMR technology in a hard drive consists of having the data almost superimposed on the platter, so the read head reads several pieces of data at once, and has to sort them to find out what it has read, which results in reading errors, and so the sector is reread to check, the same problem with writing, so the drive is much slower than traditional CMR drives.
CMR costs more (I got the 2TB at the same price for CMR as for SMR, so where does the extra money for the SMR disk go?) and takes up more space on the disk, so you need more platters for the same size, but the data is well separated and there are few read or write errors.
In theory, SMR disks are supposed to allow larger capacity disks, but at Western Digital, the largest capacity disks (20, 16, 24 TB) are all CMR.
It's a very good HDD at this price, the speeds are good but it's still an HDD and you're not looking to play with it but to store it.
Very good, it works perfectly.
Just had a detection problem at the beginning, but that was quickly sorted out. I'm pleased with it.
