I bought it so that I could easily reformat old NAS disks when I needed to increase capacity, so it does the job very well and lets me aggregate disks in RAID. However, I did have to replace the rear fan, which is a real pain, so I followed a tutorial to fit a Noctua 8cm: phew!
no problems with delivery and the product is what I expected
easy to set up and quiet
the HDD's don't get hot
This box works well: the hard disks are recognised as they should be.
However, I found some major flaws:
- fan on "Auto" doesn't work as expected: even if the temperatures are high, the speed doesn't move one iota, forced to fiddle with the fan on manual if you want to change the fan speed
- noise: quite unpleasant from speed 2 on 3, acceptable on minimum speed (even if it exceeds the noise of my pc next door)
- overheating: my disks end up reaching a temperature >50° after a few hours, to remedy this, leave the front door slightly ajar, the hard disks then easily lose 10° and return to their proper temperature (around 40°); this clearly shows a design flaw in the airflow, I think a front fan sucking in air would not have been too much, the rear fan exhaling the air
I couldn't try the RAID mode, as I use my disks in Single mode (I manage my own backups with a software).
In short, this box does the job and replaces external disks, but beware of the disks overheating (leave the front door ajar), really not great at that level.
This is my 2nd ICY BOX IB-RD3640SU3.
easy installation of the disks and no recognition problems under Windows or Unix.
The hardware is reliable and clean.
There is a multitude of single to raid choices.
The box is noisy and you can hear the fan.
Even the fan can be turned off or on.
Without the fan on I have not experienced any overheating or only high temperatures.
Afterwards it depends on where you place your box, if it is surrounded by other boxes or devices with a heat release then it is logical that the T° > but if you are logical you install your box so that it can breathe without a fan.
I didn't have any problems without a fan with the first one this summer which wasn't cold so I don't see any problems on the horizon.
Good material
I have never had any problems with this box (it is a bit noisy when the box fan is activated).
It does its job perfectly and I have never had any problems with it, not even with the new one which is going to have a WD 12TO HDD + other HDDs.
This box does everything from the cellar to the attic.
I don't regret my purchase and thanks to LDLC for the advice
I've been using this product for a while now and I'm very happy with it.
I recommend this method of delivery
a great low cost solution for backup
but a real sound box the case alone is silent and you introduce a silent HDD (western digital RED) and you are with a noisy thing the small click of the disc during the writing are multiplied by 20
the manufacturer could have added a foam inside to soundproof the case
Since Windows 10 does backups very well and very clearly, an external box on, in RAID, with 4 bays for the hard disks, is an excellent solution. After having been disappointed by the NAS system (much appreciated by computer specialists but not by all users who like to store, classify... their files themselves), far too intrusive, even cumbersome if a server is not necessary. I recommend the RD3640SU3 system, which handles different types of RAID very well, and is quieter than the simple model (which I also own, but to which I added plastic washers to reduce the noise of the fan.
