This is my second router of this type, the old one didn't support the power grid but this time it's powered by an inverter... The VPN configuration of this router is very intuitive and is supported by many VPN providers. My rating is 10/10
Very good router, easy to set up, with many options not usually available in other brands' consumer routers, unless you install a free firmware. The free DDNS service provided by Asus is also very useful.
I'm not sure what to make of it, but I'm sure it's a good idea to have a look at it. On the other hand, the speed is really good, with a 3 times faster speed than my old and venerable WRT54GL...
So, even if you can easily install alternative open source firmwares, I think that for most people, there is no need to flash anything other than the latest official version.
Conclusion: router to buy with eyes closed (without confusing it with the AC68U).
Very good interface either via the web homepage or via the Asus app on mobile.
I configured it as an access point and not as a router because I have a rather complex network and I want to keep the DHCP of my LiveBox play fibre. In router mode, it seems complicated to establish a gateway between the LiveBox and the Asus router so that devices on both networks can communicate easily with each other. This is due to the limitation of the LiveBox and not the Asus router; to be investigated...
The transmission power of the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi radios can be adjusted.
In terms of throughput, with 5 GHz wifi set to medium power, I'm at 550 Mbit/s in the vicinity and 300 Mbit/s at the end of my house (real throughput measurements on a laptop and almost identical with a mobile phone). It doesn't replace a cable but it's still satisfactory.
It is possible to program the radio waves to be cut off at night and even to program a complete stop and restart of the router.
It also allows you to exchange files between several users. However, I reserve this function for a Synology NAS.
I almost returned it to LDLC because this router has a bug: after a day, the processor is close to 100%, a reboot does not change anything: a real toaster. I have to do a full reset every day. I have tried with several different firmwares (LDLC advice) and the problem happens again. In SSH (top command) it is the mtdblock3 process that seems to cause this problem.
I had exchanges for 2 weeks with Asus customer support. They sent me a beta firmware that fixes the problem. This should be released in the next official firmware update. Congratulations to them.
Since then, it works perfectly.
Bought after switching to fibre to replace a Dlink 624+ :-). After some difficulties due to not being able to change the DNS address range (or I haven't found it yet), connected my PCs and my NAS to RJ 45 and 2 laptops to WiFi. It's pulsing like crazy. I haven't done all the settings yet, it's been 10 years since the last time LOL.
It works perfectly with a great stability and a more than comfortable power in 5Ghz.
I've been using it for a while now and I'm very pleased with the quality of the product.

I recommend it! Fully configurable with the asus wrt by Merlin software. The basic software is limited as soon as you want a particular configuration

I never wanted to pay this much money until now but I should have done it before.
The router is ultra complete /simple/ and especially much faster than my old wrt54gs
I've been using the router for a while now and I'm not sure if it's a good one or not.
I have not looked too hard but it seems to be perfectible.
Being neither a novice nor an expert in networking, but wanting quality configurable hardware (the reputation of the RT-AC68U being well established). I am not disappointed! It's a great product, I recommend :)
+ Easy to install
+ Understandable settings; I found the (basic) options I was interested in
- I didn't notice any improvement in throughput compared to the previous standard (my PC is supposed to be AC compatible)
- The range is inferior to my previous router (I can't get a signal on the first floor of my house)
So I'm already thinking of changing it...
