As my previous tower, a Fractal R3, gave me complete satisfaction, it was only natural that I should turn to this brand again.
Their dust filter systems, intelligent removable hard drive slots, the whole thing is very modular, and they can accommodate both 120 mm and 140 mm fans, offering great versatility.
I hesitated between the R6 and the R5. Unlike the R6, the R5 has the advantage of not having the tunnel at the bottom to protect the power supply (useless with a conventional fan, in my opinion). What's more, the R5 is lighter and has more slots for hard drives. The USB ports are identical between the two models. The only notable advantage of the R6 for me was the ability to place the GPU vertically.
All in all, although this isn't the latest case, it does offer some significant benefits, and its lower price may well be an advantage. I highly recommend this brand
I wanted to change my DAW PC this time, and unlike all my previous computers, I decided to choose each component in a configuration that would evolve over time according to my needs.
The FRACTAL DESIGN DEFINE R5 BLACK tower is exactly what I wanted. It's sober, airy, silent, no vibrations, no glass, very stable with its imposing weight.
After several months with it, I have no regrets about my choice ^^.
First time I've invested so much in a camera, but what a difference compared to the others! Yet I already had a Corsair for 80euros.... But here, there is no photo: A masterpiece and an incredible number of possibilities, a perfect finish, quality fans.... A delight to assemble.
Serious workmanship. Easy to install components, especially hard disks (2.5" and 3.5") which have numerous racks included in the case.

Everything is well done, cable management, cooling, inserting an oversized CG, adding disks, everything is possible and simple! Very good isolation for dust.
But the parcel arrived with the box shocked at the bottom on the left side.
The black paint on the left side door is damaged as well as the bottom of the case.
Not good for a new case at this price.

Silence, elegance, efficiency, everything is there.
But their authors don't have a cat, that's for sure.
Those who do know that they are beasts that like long, warm, flat surfaces and that they fill the jack and USB sockets on the roof of the tower with hair.
Tower builders, think of the dust and put removable caps on your roof sockets if you refuse to put them on the front.
My cat and I will give you half a star less.
The silence, the cooling, the quality of manufacture and the aestheticism make that I use since a long time this brand.
The only real downside is the position of the usb and audio plugs on the top, without protection they get dusty and end up having some false contact (audio especially), think of protecting them.
Clearly a high-end case, the finishes are impeccable. The look is rather sober, which weighed in favour of this case compared to others more flashy.
From a layout point of view, everything seems to fit easily in the case. I didn't have to assemble the PC myself, so I can only say that it is possible to manage the cables inside the case properly.
As far as silence is concerned, even if it was not a strong criterion for me, I tried a so-called silent case to see the difference. The conclusion: there is a real difference in sound which is pleasant in everyday life. Nevertheless, you can still hear the CPU and GPU fans, despite the insulation. The noise is reduced, but in a quiet room you can still hear the fans. To be honest, I was expecting a bit more silence, also considering the chosen components (Noctua NH-U9S on the I5 CPU, GPU with two big fans). That's why I'm taking 0.5 stars off my rating.
Given my usage and criteria, I can recommend this case.
Wanting to make a silent assembly and to replace my old Antec box (which has had its day), I decided to take a Fractal Design.
The assembly is very simple and I really appreciate the possibility to run cables in the rear part of the case (near the SSD racks) to gain visibility in the front part. It's a small negative point, but you have to be careful to fix the SSDs at the back and to "pull" the SATA cables a little bit to avoid that they don't clutter up this part of the case too much: indeed, it can prevent the case from closing properly.
I also appreciate the space the beast offers and its modularity: I really feel like I made a good investment.
Last mini negative point: the opening mechanism of the "door" can slam a little when closing, but it is perhaps an assembly error on my part.
So if you have space (a rather massive case) and you want to buy a sober and silent case, don't hesitate.
Very suitable for a gamer PC configuration.
Fulfils its purpose completely. Everything is easily accessible. The case opens very easily without tools with a quick release panel. The design is simple and elegant. Everything is easy to install without any fuss and it is very modular. Very easy to install. I am very satisfied with this purchase.

A very well designed, ergonomic case. Its size allows almost any type of equipment to pass through and allows good air circulation in the case.
Very modular, it allows to add other fans everywhere, those present in the base are very quiet and their speed is modifiable on the fly.
The internal installation is very clean.
This camera is just perfect for its price!
It deserves all the praise I've read about it.
With the fans set to half or minimum, the silence is really comfortable.
On the installation side, the drive bays are modular and easy to mount/dismount. There are plenty of cable channels, which are wide enough and rubber coated. A small plus is the 3 velcro fasteners provided to attach the cables.
Irreproachable on the solidity and the quality of the materials. A big positive point for the accessories supplied (screws and cable ties) which are legion!
The only drawback, but perhaps my case was weakened during manufacture or transport: the left side door has difficulty closing completely.
I have just finished installing my photo computer. This tower is very well finished, all the panels are soundproofed, the hard drive racks are more than sufficient. I have 2 hdd's and an ssd for the moment, I can still put 6 disks. All the cable passages are blocked with rubber. There are two fans and with the ventirad on, I can hardly hear anything. This tower is imposing and very well made. Everything to make a very nice PC.
The enclosure is simple and spacious. The modularity of the interior makes it easy to assemble the components.
Positive point:
- The cable management is child's play thanks to the Velcro straps already present on the case.
- Very good sound insulation.
No negative points.

Well packaged in its box with polystyrene protection (no way the box will move during transport), the box is imposing and its sleek design gives it a unique style. The assembly instructions are very clear and include all the necessary accessories. It's easy to assemble, the airflow is optimised and the modularity of the different elements (HDD and drive slots) allows you to customise the configuration. The enclosure muffles sounds really well.
It's also very wide and deep, yet reasonably high. This makes it easy to mount even the biggest graphics cards of the moment.
The finishing touches are there.

It's a great piece of equipment and I'm very happy with it.
Solid, spacious, well laid out, aesthetically pleasing and supplied with a complete set of screws. Nothing to complain about on the case itself.
The only drawback is that the audio connector on the front is of poor quality, the jacks can be pushed in beyond the normal stop. The case is a good one, modular, practical, quiet in "eco" mode but not annoying, spacious, fan base provided sufficient for a correct cooling if good fan processor.
Configured : gtx 960 / amd fx + bquiet shadow rock slim / extreme3 / 16GB ram / SSD X2 and SATA X2 / Optical Drive / ALim Lepa 550 Bronze.
The only drawback is the screw thread on the back of the doors.
Beautiful, well-made case. Imposing. The design is really clean and discreet despite the size. The interior is very modular. The screws and bolts are dense and the extra wires are welcome. Really quiet (i7, Noctua, GTX 970 KF2 and EVGA SuperNova 550W). 2 USB 2.0 ports and 2 USB 3.0 ports on the front. The small fan controller is handy. In short, simple and efficient.
This bulky tower allows a behemoth like the Noctua NH-D15 to pass through, and with room to spare! The same goes for the graphics cards, as the 3 hard disk bays (which contain many slots) are removable.
The case comes with 2 fans that can be adjusted on the fly with a switch on the front. The maximum speed is audible but not annoying, while the other two speeds are hardly audible, while maintaining a satisfactory airflow. Moreover, it is possible to add several other fans.
The black spot of this tower is its USB ports on the front: there is way too much clamping (especially on the USB 3)! You have to force like a brute to unplug something plugged in. If you have a fragile USB stick, expect the connector to break and get stuck inside...
What can I say, the case is extremely well finished and has many nice features. The space on the back of the motherboard for the management cable is really spacious and generally you can make a very clean installation! The case is also very quiet, which is really nice.
The only small problem is, if you are in my case too, when installing a mini-ITX or micro-ATX, that the case panel cables are a bit short (USB and Audio front panel as well as the LEDs and buttons). You have to find extension cords if you want to continue to configure and install properly.

Space, space I say! The cable routing to the CM and disk slots is very good, as is the fan in front of the disks, which is very handy for ventilating the storage mills.
The connectivity on the front panel is just fine.
The case includes the necessary screws and bolts, as well as rubber washers to reduce the vibrations of the hard drives.
Two 2.5" slots are available on the back of the CM slot, especially for SSDs.
The width of the device is almost enough to make a bedside table :D
As for the opening of the covers, it's very simple and reliable.
I'm not sure if it's a good idea to use the same screws as the other units. You can't go wrong with the screw/spacer alignment for example. But that didn't prevent me from having the CM + huge fan unit firmly attached.
First of all, check the size of the case, with the picture you can see that it is well proportioned, the package with generous protections is imposing.
Once opened the size is impressive.
The rest:
The cable routing is 90% hidden with rubber protection in the passages.
The door opens to the right or can be changed to the left.
Inaudible fan.
Each type of screw is in a separate bag...
In short, the quality is all over the place without a hitch.
The version with a transparent window should not be difficult to wire cleanly, as everything is hidden.
Water cooling has been planned, but not tested yet
Elegant and sober case. Spacious, there is room to place the components properly and to pass the fingers.
The cable management is very well thought out, all the wires are behind the case, so the components benefit from the airflow of the fans.
The case isolates the noise of the internal components reasonably well, but silence will only be obtained if you choose silent components. A remark that could be applied to all cases, however.
The front sockets are placed at the top of the case, so you don't have to bend over too much to plug in a USB stick.
Amongst the criticisms, we can say that the USB2 and USB3 connectors could be better distinguished than by a simple mention written on the case. It's illegible if you don't look at it, so you have to remember whether the USB3 is on the right or the left. Fractal could have coloured the USB3 in blue, as is the standard, which would have made identification easier.
Finally, the blue disk activity LED lights up too brightly, it hurts my eyes.
These are just details, compared to the general quality of this box, which I recommend without fear of disappointing.
Everything has been said about this beautiful, silent (without being inaudible), well finished box (even if the side panels are not particularly convenient to replace). Very generously equipped, almost too much for the average person. Let me explain:
SSD slots behind the CM but there are already 8 hard drive/SSD slots in the front...
Numerous slots for additional fans but the two already present are very efficient...
Speed control on the front for 2 fans, useless in my case as I do this setting more precisely from the Win10 desktop via my Asus B150 M CM.
In short, I could (should?) have chosen a more modest, less bulky and...less expensive case. The choice of this beast is only justified if you want to host a non-standard configuration or if you want to treat yourself to this very classy toy, even if it means leaving it 2/3 empty (like mine!) and to hell with being greedy!
I love it, it's really beautiful and very solid, a subtle mix of black and white, I really like it. I like it a lot. But concerning the screws provided with it... Read the instructions carefully otherwise beware of surprises.
The case is very well laid out and perfect with several adjustable fan spaces and many HDD slots. The only small problem is that the HDDs are fixed with screws that go through a rubber washer, which is very difficult to install and tends to damage the threads of the HDD.
Excellent case, in every respect.
For me, the sleek design is exactly what I was looking for. It doesn't look out of place in a living room and doesn't shout "gamer" from the rooftops. The dimensions and the weight to be taken into account, because it is a beautiful baby all the same!
Inside, the modularity and ventilation solutions are exemplary. The airflow can be configured as you wish as long as you have enough fans. Apparently it is also a perfect case for watercooling (although I don't use this method of cooling). However, the 2 fans provided are good, but in my case emit a very (very) slight noise, and moreover they are not PWM, which makes it worthwhile to replace them with Noctua or beSilent fans.
Cable management is easy, and you can leave the interior very "clean". A pleasure.
As far as sound insulation is concerned, the case does a good job of muffling most of the sound produced inside the PC. That said, if you are interested in this case, it is because the rest of your components are already quite quiet. So this case is what completes the system by eradicating the little remaining noise.
The only small complaint is that the USB ports on the front (top front) are a bit "hard" and don't inspire much confidence. But that's just a detail.
In short, an excellent purchase to host a powerful and silent configuration if you have the space.
Excellent camera, this is my first camera where I am really satisfied.
Supplied with 3 fairly quiet fans, it exudes quality.
Otherwise the hard drive / drive mountings are not strong enough in my opinion, I managed to bend one without realising, half a star down for this.
The insulation is perfect, no noise gets through.
What can I say about this box except that it is simply brilliant!
I used to use a laptop and the noise it made was unbearable!
Now I enjoy the pleasure of silence haha!
It's simple, everything is there! The filters, the adjustable HDD cage, the velcro to hold the different cables, the covers to hide the cables, the general soundproofing, the quality of the air flow (general temperature around 27°C), the adjustment of the fans on the front, etc...
The design remains very sober and neat and this is what I like. The general finish is simply perfect.
As far as assembly is concerned, the various elements listed above mean that everything is there to make your life easier!
So many things that one comment would not be enough to describe everything!
To come back to the last point which is for me the best, it's the silence, the case insonorisation absolutely everything and that's great!
So I strongly recommend this camera, which for its price range is in my eyes the best!
This review is based on 7 months of use.
Overall I am very happy. The space is - as indicated on the data sheet - just right. My R9 290X graphics card fit right in, without having to remove any of the hard drive bays. There is no lack of accessories and they are very useful. At no time did I feel like I was missing anything. The dust filtration also seems to be on point. As far as silence is concerned, my power supply is a bit noisy, so it's difficult to say, but from what I've been able to observe by listening, it's extremely satisfactory.
In short, the quality is there and I recommend - like many others - this box.
Where to start, the aspect at the exit of the box is magnificent, a very sober style but which has its effect!
The case is heavy and breathes quality. When you open it up, there is a lot of room, especially if you are like me and skip the 5.25" bays and a 3.5" bay.
The installation of the various components is very easy.
The fans provided are very quiet, fortunately as the case is made for silence!
The case remains very quiet, especially with one of my HDD's which is scratching quite loudly!
I highly recommend this case for those who are looking for silence and mainly because the price of this case is fair!

Quiet box
The R5 from Fractal is sober, discreet and efficient despite its large size. However, as soon as you open it, you can feel that everything inside the case has been well thought out so that each configuration has its place!
I'm equipped with a R9 290X, a graphics card that heats up a lot, and after months in the furnace, I'm able to enjoy coolness and above all silence, even when the (external) fans are at their maximum speed! However, don't expect Zero Decibel either.
The installation of the components is simple (instructions provided) the R5 offers us 2 usb3 ports and 2 usb2 ports on the front. In short, there is nothing to say, 100% satisfied, except maybe for the price which is a bit high.

I took it for its sober look and its capacity to accommodate the biggest configs, I installed a MSI Z97 G3 with a Gigabyte GTX960, 1 SSD and 1 HDD.
Nothing to say, you can't hear anything.
