This CPU runs extremely well on both Windows (Win10) and Linux (Archlinux); the AMD firmware software isn’t too intrusive, I ran it once to update the devices and that’s it.
Powerful and resourceful processor!
I paired it with an MSI B850M-GAMING-PLUS-WIFI motherboard and a CORSAIR NAUTILUS 240 liquid cooler in a Fractal Design Pop Mini Air case. The two fans on the Nautilus 240 have been replaced with Arctic P12 Pro A-RGB fans, and "PBO" is enabled in the BIOS. Result: when the processor and video card (Gigabyte GV-R9060XTGAMING OC-16GD) are stressed under FurMark, the maximum processor temperature is 90.1°C (ambient temperature of 27°C) for frequencies of 5.1 GHz for one CCD and 5.075 GHz for the second CCD (maximum power consumption of the processor: approximately 179W)! I think we're not far off the performance of a Ryzen 9 7900X. I understand better why there is little price difference between the Ryzen 9 7900 (3.7GHz base / 5.4GHz Boost / 65W TDP default) and the 7900X (4.7GHz base / 5.6GHz Boost / 170W TDP default)!
I chose this processor primarily because the price was "fair" for a total of 12 physical cores.
It's not necessarily a processor for gamers, in which case the 9800x3d is the better choice. However, it does offer advantages over its gaming competitor:
- 12 cores and 24 threads (spread across two CCDs)
- A slightly lower price
- A certain amount of L3 cache (after all, it has "only" 32MB less ;) )
- Supplied with a cooling fan
- But above all, incredible energy efficiency!
It was really this last aspect that swayed me towards this choice. This processor consumes a maximum of 90W and does not exceed 65° with a Dark Rock Pro 5 equipped with a single fan (and yet this cooler is far from being the best for cooling AM5s) and is around 45° at idle.
In short, less gaming, but more versatility. Even in early 2026, it may be worth the cost on a "powerful" AM5 platform, which will be upgradeable anyway.
The equipment was received in November 2024 and fitted in March 2025. I'm really not disappointed, despite the wait for the other components...
