I bought this Mac to do some development and publish on the store. Strangely, access to the Apple developer space is very complicated from a PC. This allows me to compare with my 14 inch Asus Ultrabook which is already 2 years old.
Positive points :
- Nice machine, very well finished
- Nice screen, well contrasted and defined
- Smooth and quiet keyboard.
Negative points :
- Heavy, especially compared to the very first Mac Book Air. This one is not Air at all.
- Keyboard input button really small. I type next to it a lot.
- No HDMI socket. Docking station mandatory.
- Magsafe cable is useless compared to USB-C. The charger delivered is only 32W (Magsafe is designed to exceed the 100W limit for USB-C). For the price Apple could have delivered a more powerful USB-C charger instead of selling it as an option.
- No USB-C charger even though the USB-C ports accept charging (I put the Apple charger and the Magsafe cable in the box... my Asus 65W charger does the job better and it works to charge my PC, Samsung smartphone and iPad too). The only thing missing is the iPhone but that will change soon (thanks to the EU for its regulation).
- When resetting the Mac, an internet connection is required and the keyboard switches to QWERTY without warning. Easy to type the complex Wifi password ;-)
- Horrible Apple 2FA authentication
- Fast processor but not that much compared to what AMD does on PC.
I had much more appreciated the discovery of the first Mac with its black and white screen and the paper clip to eject the floppy disk.
In the end, I still use my Asus and this Mac only when I have to. It's a shame to do it out of obligation. I was expecting much better after all the marketing from Apple about this ARM-based Mac.
