One: it's a waste of raw material, space, weight and therefore probably money for the consumer who may be paying a higher weight or volume than he could/should have paid with a more suitable packaging.
Secondly: it is poorly protected as there was no bubble wrap or anything else to secure the box in the carton. Fortunately the box was not damaged and the lens works perfectly. Which is the main thing.
